The Road Home
While the school was being built by the men, the women would each fix a meal for the guys. Each girl would place their plate or bowl of food on a big table. The workers including the teacher would walk over and pick up a random meal and eat lunch. Every day Di would fix her best meals and put them in a special blue and white bowl with the hope that the teacher would choose her bowl. The day the teacher had to suddenly leave for the city, he was suppossed to stop by Di's for a last meal but he wasn't allowed to stay even for a few hours. When someone informed Di that the teacher was leaving in a carriage she grabbed her bowl of food and ran about a mile trying to catch him. She ran over hills, through forest, up and down roads and the entire time while holding onto the bowl of food which was wrapped with a scarf. She was running as fast as she could with great desperation. Eventually she came over the top of a hill and as the carriage was fading out of her sight she slipped and fell down the side of the hill. When she hit the ground, the bowl shattered into pieces. She sat on the hillside and realizing he was gone and the special bowl was broken, she emotionally broke down and began crying. She then realized her hair clip, which the teacher had given her as a gift, had fallen out of her hair while she was running and it was lost. This was all to much for her and depression soon began to overtake her.
