The set design is so incredible that it almost distracts you from the scene. In this scene, Mistress 1 greets Songlian and after Gong Li leaves, the Mistress mumbles to herself "such sins, such sins" which is how she feels about the system of a Master having four wives, especially a beautiful 19 year old. She's not mad at Songlian, she dislikes the way her society functions. The two girls in the background are maids and the man is a house keeper.
