She is talking to a male house keeper in this image and it is a close up of her asking the question "Why are there so many red lanterns?" The answer is that each day one of the Mistresses is chosen to be with the master including sex and spending the night. Whichever Mistress is chosen, the Red Lantern's are hung inside and outside her house and are lit by a fire lit candle inside so they glow with a red-orange radiance.
