I read this book and it's very good. I learned a lot about old Shanghai and it is fasinating. Photographs and descriptions of daily life during a hard time in poor Shanghai. Some of the things that she described I will never forget and this book actually was a part of my early learning of China. I read it on my lunch hours during work for about a month from start to finish and it is a very interesting and fun book to read.

A Special Book To Read.....

Wild Swans
'Wild Swans' was the best book I ever read about China. Non-Fiction true story of three generations of a family from the view of three women starting from the era of life related to the film 'Raise The Red Lantern' all the way through to the Revolutionary War and up to the present day. 300 pages with small print, this is an intense read and an education of a real family honoring old school China traditions.
Subjects such as masters, concubines, house order based on importance of position, bound feet (3" Golden Lilies), the People's Liberation Army, the Nanchang Uprising, the Kuomintang–Communist alliance, the Japanese invasion, the Chinese Red Army, the Long March and all related war topics and how each event effected the family members of this family.
This is probably the best book you could read to learn about real detailed life in old school China. It will introduce you to a vast array of words and terms that cover the many issues of 20th century Zhongguo and an in-depth look into the world's most successful civilization in the history of mankind.
It's a slow read and almost every paragraph of this intense book is filled with detailed information that you will need to ponder as you move through the story. I actually had to stop reading it 25% way into the book and start over because there was so much information on each page I had to read it twice to retain all the finite details. | |
